SATELLITE SESSION “PREP IN REAL WORLD: FIRST LESSONS TO EXTEND PREP TO THE KEY POPULAITONS”

On July 24, from 06:30 PM to 08:30 PM, during the 22nd International Conference on Aids (Amsterdam), it was held the satellite session “PrEP in real world: First lessons to extend PrEP to the key populations”, chaired by Beatriz Grinsztejn, Instituto de Pesquisa Clínica Evandro Chagas – Fiocruz – Brazil and Johannes Van Dam, PATH – EUA.

The key populations are disproportionally affected by HIV, and the incidence us continuous or increasing in several low- and medium-income countries. Although the pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) offers the potential to significantly reduce new infections, its absorption in the low- and medium-income countries is limited to research and demonstration projects in low scale. As far as the services of PrEP continue to grow and the demand increases, it is vital to learn lessons from the successes and challenges of the current PrEP models: administered by communities, public and private, and services to better reach different key populations. The session counted on learning from four PrEP programs towards the key populations and on a panel with users and implementing parties of PrEP.

The session counted on several presentations, among them: Michelle Rodolph, WHO, Switzerland, “PrEP and key populations: overview, normative guidelines, and recommendations”, Yogan Pillay, National Health Department of South Africa, “Challenges of PrEP program of the sexual worker of South Africa: Learned lessons, towards other key populations”, Bao Ngoc Vu, PATH, Vietnan, and Ngoc Nguyen Anh, G-Link Social Enterprise, Vietnam “Scaling PrEP through community leadership and public-private partnerships in Vietnam”.
